German Donauwelle Kuchen Recipe & The German Danube

German Donauwelle Kuchen Recipe

Donauwelle (lt:Danube wave) is a traditional sheet cake popular in Germany and Austria. It's a pound cake with sour cherries, buttercream, cocoa and chocolate and like a Marble cake bright and dark cake batter are mixed into each other to create swirl effects.Due to its wavy pattern inside and its chocolate decoration that resembles waves it got its name although the derivation of the term "Donau" is not clear. It could be a hint to the prevalence of the cake that is popular in those states that the river Donau flows through .Another name is Schneewittchenkuchen which means Snow-White-Cake and gives credit to the colour combination black, white and red that is also mentioned in the fairy tale of Snow White.
INGREDIENTS
SERVINGS 8-10
1(18 ounce) boxbetty crocker poundcake mix
3tablespoons cocoa powder
1(3 1/2 ounce) package Jello Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
1cup butter or 1 cup margarine
Magic Shell ice cream topping
DIRECTIONS
Mix the pound cake mix as directed on the box.
Put 1/2 of the batter in a greased 9"x14" pan or a springform pan.
Mix in cocoa powder in the rest of the batter to turn dark brown. Gently spoon over the vanilla batter. (Use a spatula and "lay" it onto the other batter, as opposed to dropping.).
Lay cherries on top in rows, 1" away from each other. Do not press in, they will sink in while baking.
Bake 40 minutes at 350 (or until done). Let the cake cool completely.
Make the german buttercreme  and spread a rich layer (about half an inch thick) over the top of your cake when cool.

Finally pour one bottle of Magic Shell ice cream topping on top. Tilt cake to cover. And enjoy!

The Danube provides the ideal setting for both cyclists and boat lovers to wend their way gently down the river taking in the rich landscape and culture around them and appreciating the proverbial Bavarian hospitality.
